About This Class

Today’s digital businesses heavily rely on the role of the product manager. Product managers are also seen as a breeding grounds for CXO slots at major tech firms. In this session you will learn what a product manager does, how they do it and how to think like a product manager. This class will expose you to the tools product managers use as well as examples of work outputs that come from real world examples. The product manager curriculum is also a perfect template for any would be entrepreneurs.

Depending on the experience level/make up of the class we'll touch on many of these topics:

  • What is Product Management? vs. New Product Management or Product Development
  • Ideation & the 12 Types of Innovations
  • Design Thinking Overview
  • Lean Startup Basics – MVP concepts
  • How much “techie stuff” does a Product Manager need to know? Databases, open source options, cloud, code, compiled code, languages, frameworks, stacks, OSI model, APIs, payment processing.
  • Software Development Methodology Overview – Waterfall vs Agile and in between
  • Agile/ Scrum Basics – More than just a software development methodology, becoming a management style.
  • Management of Software Development – How do you “manage” the software development process? Who is involved? Expectation setting. Budget/timeline/scope. Documents used. How to write requirements (PRD, FRD, RTM). Touch on Jira, GitHub, Amazon/Rackspace
  • Testing – What’s involved with testing? How to “manage” testing. Writing test scripts. HR for testing. How much testing is enough? When to start field testing? Tools for testing: Jira, Test Fairy/Test Flight, Survey Monkey.
  • Funding & Project Management – How much do you need? Where to get it? Bootstrap basics. The concept of a pier vs a bridge. The key to funding is to properly setting and hitting milestones.

David is an accomplished product management leader who has led teams and built and launched products in both F100 companies and start ups. David started his career spending six years as a management consultant for Accenture and PwC. After graduate school he got into product management working at a start up that was eventually sold to Nokia. After that he went on to work in Product Management at Sprint where he served as a product manager helping to launch the nation's first wireless broadband product. Since then, he's founded three companies, one died a slow death and the other two are alive and well, producing millions in revenue. He's passionate about sharing his learnings and helping others on their career path.
