People think in Pictures. Graphic Recording (aka "Scribing") is the process of listening to a speaker and taking live visual notes, while they talk. You can do this in meetings, workshops, conferences, classrooms, or just for yourself. The goal is to create a visual summary of the content, filtering through all the noise to tell the story of the key messages. In other words, to literally draw the "Big Picture".

Full of tips & tricks, for anyone just beginning their GR journey!

Note: If you prefer working digitally bring an iPadPro with Apple Pencil and Procreate already loaded, but the focus will be on analog processes.

Takeaways

  • Set-Up: We'll discuss what materials you'll need to get ready to go out and Graphic Record IRL. Different mediums are suited to different kinds of events, so we'll cover a few different options in terms of the gear needed for various kinds of jobs.
  • Tune-in: More important than drawing are the skills of listening and synthesizing. Graphic recording is NOT about taking "illustrated minutes"... its about filtering through the noise and getting to heart of the matter. We'll cover some tactics for listening/filtering content as you go.
  • Organising Principles: It's not just about what you say, it's how you say it. We'll talk about some guiding design principles that will affect how the viewer "reads" your final image.
  • Visual Dictionary: Once you know what you want to capture, you need to get it down as quickly and economically as possible. A "Visual Dictionary" is a really useful way of keeping an arsenal of useful pictures close at hand (some key-concepts tend to reoccur).
  • Some quick typography/"font" tips. Graphic recording is about the interplay of images and words, so while you don't need to be a master calligrapher, your writing does need to be legible. We'll discuss some easy tips to upgrading your handwriting that will pay off immediately! ).

Preparation

Any prerequisites? just curiosity... Some drawing experience is a nice bonus, but definitely NOT necessary! (This is really about ideas, not just pictures).

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING COVID-19

In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, we have put in place precautionary measures to keep our community safe. As we all make sense of the evolving situation, General Assembly is guided by two priorities: ensuring safety and health while minimising disruption to our learners.

We are delivering all programs in a remote learning environment and temporarily closing our campus facilities. This workshop will therefore be taking place live and online and instructions will be sent to those who sign up on how to prepare and log in for the session. Trust us this is just as fun and with the same learning outcomes as our remote format mirrors our in person format!

To learn more about our approach to online learning and best practices for remote classrooms, check out this video.

For more information of General Assembly’s response, check out our latest updates here. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please reach out to our Student Services team at melbourne@generalassemb.ly.

Please Note

  • This session is taken completely online.
  • You will need a computer and a strong internet connection.
  • Download Zoom. Zoom is the video conferencing tool we will use. It works a lot like Google Hangouts or Skype. You will need to create an account in order to join the call.
  • We will provide a link to the session via email 24 hours in advance - keep an eye on your inbox

Please contact melbourne@ga.co or phone GA Melbourne on (03) 8592 7303 if you have any questions, concerns or need assistance.
