About This Workshop Series

Whether you have experience in programming or are looking to get started for the first time, getting involved in the Python community will put you on the fast track to honing your skills. In this 2-part workshop, you’ll learn all about Python - including how to get started, what advantages and disadvantages Python provides as a programming language, the essentials of programming in Python, and what tools are available to build applications in Python.

Please bring a laptop with Python 3 installed.

Schedule

Dec 9
Friday, 9 December 10 am – 1 pm GMT Part 1 - Introduction to Programming in Python

In part one of this series we'll start at the basics. From a conceptual introduction to programming and the characteristics of Python, we'll move on to cover syntax and get hands on writing code in Python. Coding experience will come in handy, but is by no means required.

Dec 9
Friday, 9 December 2 5 pm GMT Part 2 - Webscraping in Python

The second part builds on the introduction of part 1 and will focus specifically on the goal of getting data from the web. In journalism, science and increasingly in business, data that is represented in web pages can provide useful information. We'll look at the technique of webscraping and how we can do this in Python. At the end of the workshop you'll have written your own scrapers and used them to acquire data from the web.

Takeaways

  • Learn how to get set up and install Python and libraries.
  • Find out how to write your first Python script.
  • Figure out what tools to use for your next Python projects.
  • Greater preparedness for GA's Data Science part-time course.

Prereqs & Preparation
