About This Workshop

In this workshop, learn how a dynamic dashboard in Microsoft Power BI will drive better decisions with data.

Power BI Desktop, a business intelligence tool with a freemium model, will help you to describe your data with charts and visualisations that dynamically update when your users interact with your custom dashboard. During this interactive workshop, we will introduce common Power BI features with a focus on working with data and demonstrate common data wrangling steps to transform data into a format for building a dashboard.

If you want to level-up your analysis skills and learn a new way to process, analyse and visualise data, join us in this introductory workshop and learn the fun and fundamentals of working with data with Power BI.

Please note:

This workshop is highly interactive with group activities and discussions throughout. To participate you will need to:

  • Have your camera turned on for the entire session
  • Have an accessible microphone
  • Be in a quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions
  • Strong internet connection

  • A basic understanding of Power BI Desktop and using the Query Editor
  • Importing data, changing data types and creating a date dimension
  • Creating new columns (introducing DAX)
  • Building a data model – cardinality and joining tables, cross-filter direction and filter-flow

  • Step-by-step slides will be provided for reference after class.

Preparation

This workshop is designed for anyone who works with data or interprets data from reports and dashboards. No programming or dashboard experience is required.

In preparation, please download Zoom

Required: Install Power BI Desktop [https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/desktop/]. Datasets and files will be made available before the start of class and to be downloaded onto your laptop.

This session is not recorded however you will receive the instructor slides following the session.

About the Instructor

Muhsin spent a rather long time in academia collecting a degree in biochemistry and genetics and a PhD in neuroscience. Being unsuccessful in gaining a position as a mad scientist, he worked as a data analyst across a variety of industries including in government, not-for-profit and retail. He employed open-source tools to wrangle data into tidy meaningful formats to aid decision-making. Muhsin currently works at the Commonwealth Bank as a senior analyst and wears hats and colourful Converse shoes most of the time.
