About This Workshop

Displaying information in a clear and compelling way is a valuable asset for any marketing manager, PR professional, entrepreneur, or anyone needing to give context to numbers. In this class, you’ll learn the essential elements of a successful infographic and how to turn raw data into a clear visual story. We’ll also look at out how infographics relate to data visualisation and go over examples that demonstrate techniques that work and pitfalls to avoid. By the end of the class, you’ll understand the foundational steps you need to go through to create effective infographics on your own.

Prereqs & Preparation

This class is for beginners looking to learn the essential elements of a successful infographic.

Preparation: Please bring a notebook, pens, and laptop (useful for looking at online resources). You should also bring along the biggest problem you feel you have in tackling infographics at your job.

Alan Rutter is a co-founder of the content consultancy Clever Boxer. He oversaw the iPad edition launches of Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, and Vogue in the UK, and has been working with Conde Nast International as product owner on a bespoke digital asset management system for their 11 global markets. Until November 2014, he worked with Guardian Masterclasses on curating and delivering new course strands and teaching their B2B data visualisation courses for clients, including Capita, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Home Office, Novartis, Haringey Council, and Gloucestershire Police Constabulary. Previously, Alan was the Online Editor at Time Out, having also worked as Acting Deputy Editor and Features Editor on the magazine. He has over 10 years previous experience of working for magazines, both online and in print.
