About this workshop

This workshop will help you get started on raising capital for your startup. Whether it's through SecondMarket or finding angel investors, you'll have a better idea of how to go about this process by the end.

Part 1: Alternative Financing for Startups Funding in today's economy can be dificult. VCs and other traditional funding sources are becoming harder and harder to find. But what if companies were just not looking in the right place? Still not sure about full implications of convertible debt or equity? In this class you'll hear the ins and outs of alternative financing and how these deals are typically structured.

Part 2: Innovation in the Private Capital Markets with SecondMarket What do Faceboook, LinkedIn and Tesla Motors have in common? They've already traded shares on SecondMarket. Learn how to invest in private capital markets with SecondMarket, the next generation stock market.

Student Takeaways: Why the public markets no longer work for startups How the private company stock market has emerged to fill the gap The future of crowdfunding and SecondMarket’s role How investors can participate in the private markets Prerequisites: None.

Part 3: Raising Startup Capital One of the most critical issues facing entrepreneurs is deciding if and when it makes sense to raise outside capital. In today's entrepreneurial environment, there are many funding options and competitive pressures to grow rapidly. Access to capital cannot only help accelerate product development and sales, but in many cases, partnering with the right investors can influence the trajectory of a business. This class will cover key issues start-ups need to consider to make the decision that is best for their organization, including:

  • How to determine capital requirements and whether outside funding is appropriate
  • Best practices in identifying and approaching potential investors
  • The pros and cons of raising funds from angels vs funds
  • What methodologies to use in determining valuation and terms
  • The value of accelerators as a source of capital and leverage
  • The emerging role of online crowd-funding platforms
  • By the end of the class, each student will be better informed on how to think about the funding decision, become more aware of their options and be ready to develop a course of action.
