About This Class

Data Scientist is the "sexiest job of the 21st century", according to Harvard Business Review.

Despite the hype surrounding big data and where it's stored, data scientists know that the size of your data doesn't matter. It's all about what you do with it. This class represents the first step towards improving your data literacy and seeing through the hype and buzzwords.

The goal of this class is to give you a taste of data science. In addition to defining what it actually is, the main tools in the data scientist's toolbox will be introduced through examples and case studies. By the end of this session, you will be able to phrase problems in data science terms, and approach their solution in a structured and rigorous manner.

Takeaways

  • Definition of data science and its benefits
  • Ability to recognise problems that can be solved by data scientists
  • Broad familiarity with the terms and tools used in the field
  • Understanding of the predictive modelling workflow
  • Hopefully, a burning desire to learn more and become a data scientist

Prereqs & Preparation

As this is an introductory class, it won't get too technical.

To make full use of the lessons learned in this workshop and ultimately become a data scientist, some familiarity with basic programming and statistics is required. However, non-technical people who just want to know what all the hype is about will also benefit from this class.

Buddhi has extensive experience conducting academic research and driving industrial software engineering projects in analytics, enterprise search, e-commerce and mobile applications. Buddhi’s academic research has covered intelligent software agents, text mining and predictive analytics. Buddhi holds a PhD in Computer Science from the RMIT University and a Master of Software Systems Engineering from the University of Melbourne. In his free time when he is not analysing any data, he is thinking about other data that can be analysed.
