During our introductory workshop, explore the job Harvard Business Review has dubbed “the sexiest of the 21st century,” and see how modern businesses are harnessing the power of data to drive innovation. Working with real-world case studies, you’ll:

  • Learn what data scientists do and the types of problems they solve.
  • Walk through the typical data science workflow and see how the pros identify powerful business predictions.
  • Explore key tools and processes data scientists use to analyze, visualize, and model data.
  • Apply what you’ve learned to a data set to produce your own recommendations.

Prereqs & Preparation

Bring a laptop. Install Anaconda beforehand. *Tip: Scroll to your operating system version and click on the install button for Anaconda with Python 2.7. Note: We'll be using Python version 2.7 in this workshop. If you are using a PC, please install the git for windows terminal beforehand.

Technical Considerations: -For students on Windows, you’ll need Microsoft Windows 8/10 (32- or 64-bit). For those with Macs, you’ll need the Mac OS X 10.8.5 or higher, up to 10.11.4 (El Capitan).
-Upgrade your operating system before class, if needed.

Students should have some basic technical aptitude, orientation to computers, and the curiosity to learn new tools.

About the Instructor

Arezu Moussavi is a PhD student graduating in summer 2016. She pursued machine learning during her PhD program and focused on deep learning using autoencoders. She always eager to learn and experience new topics in machine learning and apply her knowledge to the real-world problems. As a winner of the best teaching award from the engineering department during working on campus, she believes that teaching is a mutual learning process and enjoys teaching.
