Basics of the internet and how webpages work

HTML and CSS are the fundamental building blocks of the web. Whether you're a beginner who wants to get started in web development, a designer looking to hand-code their concepts, or a marketer who wants a little more control over their CMS, you'll need to know HTML and CSS to get the job done.

  • Syntax of HTML and CSS
  • How to obtain a domain name
  • Building common types of websites including landing pages and marketing sites
  • Principles of front-end code organization and project structure
  • How to get your website live on the internet
  • Build a basic web page from scratch
  • Modify the code of existing websites
  • Deploy a website to the internet

Sunday, 19 January 10 am – 4 pm CST Session II: JavaScript

Through coding a website from scratch together, we'll learn the following along the way:

  • The purpose of JavaScript and how it drives interactivity in your site
  • Define the DOM and JavaScript's importance in using it to create rich web applications
  • Be able to apply problem solving skills to turn an abstract idea into a running program; use flow-charts and pseudo-code to break down a problem and to think like a programmer
  • Understand and apply programming fundamentals using JavaScript: basic data types, arithmetic, conditional statements, iteration (loops), functions, arrays and objects
  • Understand basic best-practices in software engineering at a high level

Preparation

  • This workshop is for beginners.
  • Please bring a laptop to class with Sublime Text 2 downloaded.
