About This Workshop

You've heard the term Agile, but what does it really mean and how does it all work?

In the first half of this bootcamp we'll go over Agile fundamentals. This includes the guiding philosophy, the "rituals", and how to get a team up and running using Agile principles.

The second half of the class will focus on the Product Owner and Scrum Master roles within Agile. Specifically, we'll focus on effective collaboration, how to write good user stories and discuss who should write them. We'll end the class by breaking into teams and running a retrospective.

Come prepared for a hands-on experience and plenty of practice writing user stories in a collaborative way. Expect to walk out of the class with ideas that you can bring to your own team immediately.

Lunch will be provided, including vegetarian options. Please send any dietary requirements to sydney@generalassemb.ly at least 48 hours beforehand.

Takeaways

In this bootcamp, we’ll:

  • Discover the principles behind the Agile Manifesto.
  • Identify the different stages and roles of Scrum and a sprint cycle.
  • Explore different Scrum ceremonies in-depth and learn how to keep them engaging and on track.
  • Learn what a high performing team is, and how to create one.
  • Describe best practices of Agile project management and tools used.
  • Examine the pros and cons of Agile development, and it’s predecessor Waterfall.
  • Write effective user stories, and acceptance criteria, ready for estimation.
  • Learn what a bug and an improvement are, and what they are not.
  • Explain the difference between good and bad documentation.

This bootcamp is aimed at anyone who wants to know more about agile and Scrum. Knowledge on how to use Scrum is particularly important to those involved in web development, software engineering and business development, but it isn’t limited to the tech industry.

Preparation

This is a class for beginners and those with some experience of Scrum. No prior knowledge is required.
