About This Class

In this class, we will move beyond the basics of spreadsheet creation and manipulation. This fast-paced workshop covers a fair amount of material and will be most beneficial to those who already have intermediate understanding and use of Excel. The expectation is for participants to be able to leave and begin immediately using the new skills and concepts learned in their professional roles.

Topics will include data “cleaning”/troubleshooting and showing attendees how to use some of the more advanced features of Excel to assimilate, analyze and summarize data having multiple attributes. We will also develop Pivot Tables, advanced graphs, and create basic macros. Ideally, participants will learn how to effectively manipulate and streamline data to ultimately use in conveying “data stories” upon which business decisions will be based—participants will learn to present data in a way that allows leadership a clear understanding of their organization to begin having the right conversations. Class exercises will be utilized to facilitate understanding.

Takeaways

  • Participants will learn how to effectively streamline and analyze data using some of the more advanced features of Excel.
  • Input, gather, clean, and format data for more productive use and sharing.
  • Analyze data to improve audience consumption and decision making.
  • Output and package data for external consumption.

Preparation

  • A basic understanding of the Excel spreadsheet layout and Pivot Tables

  • Common uses such as entering data into a blank spreadsheet and copying/pasting

  • An understanding of common functions such as SUM, IF, and VLOOKUP

  • Ability to create a graph from two or more sets of data points

Please bring a laptop with Microsoft Office 7 or 10 installed. It is also highly recommended that you bring a mouse.

Please download the macro feature prior to class and ensure that it functions properly (Note that the instructor uses a PC so Mac macro knowledge and troubleshooting will be limited).

Instructions for setting up the Developer tab for Macros:

PC: File > Options > Customize Ribbon > check "Developer"
Mac: Excel > Preferences > View > in Ribbon > check "Developer tab"

This is an interactive class, and your participation and questions are encouraged.
