About This Workshop
Bring your creative ideas to life with Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector graphics software, used by designers and illustrators who want to create digital graphics, logos, illustrations, and original typography.
This workshop is designed to get you up and running with Adobe Illustrator in just one day. The focus will be on step-by-step instruction leading students through the most important tools and concepts in Illustrator.
This is an introductory course designed for first time and beginner Illustrator users. No prior experience with Illustrator is required for this class.
Participants should be familiar with the basic functions of their computer, such as launching programs, creating folders, copying and pasting objects, downloading images, formatting text, finding and saving files
Takeaways
- Learn the basics: how to open a file, image trace, add text, create patterns, use layers and different brushes.
- Learn to create vector line art illustrations using the pen tool and custom brushes.
- Design an original vector logo or icon using Illustrator's essential tools.
Preparation
- You will need to have Adobe Illustrator version 2018 or higher already downloaded on your laptop at the start of class. The full version of Adobe Illustrator CC or the free 7-day trial version of it can be found here.
- This class is taken completely online via Zoom and Slack.
- You will need access to a laptop or computer with a working webcam and microphone as well as a strong internet connection.
- Class set up information will be emailed the day before & again on the day of the class.
- All communication will be sent to the email used to purchase a ticket. If you have signed up on behalf of a friend or colleague, please forward along this information.
NOTE: this session will not be recorded. Participants are encouraged to download and save any shared materials (worksheets/deck) during class for later reference as they are not shared by email.
About the Instructor
Michael Hobson

Michael is a designer with over 15 years experience under his belt. Most recently, he co-founded 3beards - the highly successful tech startup events and community company behind Silicon Drinkabout, Unicorn Hunt and more.
He started out as a teenager tinkering around in Photoshop and Flash, which led to working for an advertising startup building and designing software and adverts at the age of 17. Following that he studied at London Metropolitan University where he earned a degree in Digital Media.
Michael then spent 3 years with a web design agency in Soho, where he refined his skills and really developed his passion for design, along with a ton of client-facing skills. He co-founded and designed Pollarize, an iPhone app constructed for social decision making. He's won awards for his writing, and dabbled in everything from 'Alternate Reality Games' to timelapse video. He's extremely passionate about design, and loves making things which are not only beautiful but functional.
With 3beards, he helped transform the European startup community by building a unique and strong brand, backed up by amazing community management and events. He's been lucky enough to travel the world, enhancing & expanding out the startup community, launching new locations for Silicon Drinkabout and speaking at events.
When not designing, you'll find him either PC gaming, playing guitar or getting involved at a startup event!
