Join Women Catalysts for a conversation with Mariam Gagoshashvili of the Global Fund for Women and a screening of the StudioMobile documentary film "Vachnadze Street.” This film follows the events of a peaceful protest turned violent and explores rampant homophobia and transphobia in Georgia that often targets both cis- and transgender women from the LGBTQI community.

The Global Fund for Women

These groups are working to ensure women can own property, vote, run for office, get paid fair wages, and live free from violence. Since 1987, Global Fund for Women has invested in nearly 5,000 women-led groups across 175 countries, helping win rights for millions of women and girls. StudioMobile - Accent on Action

[http://www.mamacash.org/supportgroup/studiomobile-accent-on-action/] – was formed in November 1999 to advance women's rights through the use of video and film. The group produces documentaries about women's rights and movement, discrimination and violence against women; organizes mobile trainings on women’s rights for rural women and girls; and creates effective support materials for women’s organizations and programs, including video films and clips. StudioMobile is one of the few organizations in Georgia striving to popularize the activities of women's NGOs and women's movement in the media.

Mariam Gagoshashvili

Mariam Gagoshashvili is a queer feminist from Tbilisi, Georgia. She works as a program officer for Europe and Central Asia at Global Fund for Women. Before relocating to the United States, Gagoshashvili worked at Women’s Fund in Georgia as a program coordinator, overseeing the Fund’s programmatic and development work. Currently, she is a board member of Urgent Action Fund and has served on FRIDA’s advisory committee since 2010. In addition to her engagement with women’s funds, she has been actively involved in grassroots feminist and LGBTQI organizing in Georgia. She has co-founded the Independent Group of Feminists, an autonomous activist collective led by young women and has lectured for the Gender Studies department at Tbilisi State University. Gagoshashvili holds a BA in social psychology from the Tbilisi State University and an MA in gender studies from the Central European University (Hungary). She has also studied at the European College of Liberal Arts in Germany, where her primary research interest was in the field of gender and sexuality.
