Teaching and learning at General Assembly

From classical ballet dancer to software engineer and instructional leader, Colin Hart transformed his life and career when he graduated from General Assembly’s Back-End Web Development course (BEWD) and Web Development Immersive (WDI) in early 2014. He came back to GA to teach WDI and was recently snatched up by the new WDI Remote team to be a lead instructor for the pilot course, which launched on May 16. Colin sat with us to share his story about teaching and learning at General Assembly.

Tell me about your journey.

I spent my youth training to be a classical ballet dancer. Even though I wasn’t able to do it professionally, it was like my first career because I would spend five, six hours a day training and performing. Getting injured led me to attend college instead, and I ended up majoring in media and communications and focusing my studies on digital communications. I interned for the United Nations writing a preliminary literature review around rights and dangers for youth online in Malaysia.

Without our incredible instructors, General Assembly would not exist. It actually could not exist. It’s their passion, real-world expertise, and desire to share their knowledge with our students that make this place so valuable to communities around the world. Our instructors are awesome, and they deserve recognition. That’s why, to celebrate them and all they do, we extended National Teacher’s Day into a full Instructor Appreciation Week across our campuses: happy hours, catered lunches, and even some sweet chalk art.

Anna Lindow, GM of Campus Education at General Assembly, has been with us since 2011, and has seen how far our courses and educational offerings have come. She works closely with members of the campus team, instructors, and instructor assistants — from Seattle to London to Hong Kong.

Developing New Educational Products at GA: The Research Phase

As the Product Lead for Consumer Products at GA,  I lead the team that researches, designs, and builds all of the educational programs that you teach (or may teach one day) at General Assembly. I am one of many product managers at GA (also known as miracle makers) who build out and iterate on our education products. This includes everything from our full-time Web Development Immersive, to our part-time Digital Marketing course, and online Web Design Circuit. Here I’ll discuss how we build new products, starting with the first stage in our product development process. In a future edition, we’ll share more about how we keep our products fresh years after we’ve first built them.
