More than 2.5 million American youth experience homelessness every year, and among the many obstacles they face, access to job training and assistance in finding employment rank high on the list. Here at GA, we know the power that education can have to transform lives, which is why we are happy to announce that General Assembly’s Opportunity Fund is partnering with the Start from Here campaign to help raise awareness of these issues and participate in addressing employment challenges for economically disadvantaged young people.

Start from Here’s national campaign focuses on sharing the inspiring stories of three people who have made incredible transitions from homelessness. One young man, Jessey, after spending much of his time growing up homeless as the son of single mom, has become a successful software engineer on an upwardly mobile career path. Stories like his show the power of skills, education, and personal empowerment to help transform lives. This initiative aligns with the mission of Opportunity Fund, which is helping individuals from lower-income backgrounds and other underserved communities find new career paths through training and mentorship in GA’s technology and design programs.

In this campaign, we are joining four other organizations committed to making a difference in their local communities by addressing different aspects of the needs of homeless and economically disadvantaged youth: Larkin Street Youth Services in San Francisco, Safe Place for Youth in Los Angeles, The Harbour in Chicago, and CHRIS Kids in Atlanta.

Funds raised from the Start From Here campaign will directly support a range of services provided by these organizations. In addition to providing hands-on education and career opportunities through Opportunity Fund, General Assembly will work with other organizations that provide services for individuals from lower-income backgrounds in New York City.

We encourage you to visit www.startfromhere.org to learn more about the issue of youth homelessness and how you can support efforts to create real, positive change across the country.
